Chancing is a lot easier now that we know most members' prospective majors. Thanks James and Brent :)

Oh I have no doubt that you will! Also, welcome back.
Hey James, I was wondering if the prediction models incorporated the acceptance rates for schools because I was looking at the admissions stats for Johns Hopkins on mychances.net and apply.jhu.edu and Johns Hopkins' acceptance rate dropped 7 percent last year (with 18000+ applicants now), but mychances hasn't updated it. Does this affect our predictions or is it negligible.
Thanks :)
Thanks :)
Two things. The first is that the most recently available official, screened data is 2008-2009 - in fact, we just updated with this info about two months ago.
The second is that none of this data materially affects our predictions for you. We use student-level data to get a much more in-depth picture than we could get with the school-provided data.

Oh cool, thanks :) I was just wondering because Hopkins released some new numbers and I was curious.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Out of curiosity, is there a way to view applications & decisions just for ED/EA applicants? Thank you! :)
As of about 30 seconds ago, yes. Thanks for asking. (Let me know if it gives you any trouble.)
I'm a high school senior, and im looking to apply to some very competitive colleges. From your personal experience and what you've seen on this website, what should i focus on in essays to make myself stand out as much as possible?

Hey James,
Just FYI. I think something is wrong with the Monte Carlo... it tells me I have about an 89% chance of getting into every school on my list (lol...) even though my collegetracker has a completely different idea. Just thought you might want to look into this in the 'off' season

OK, problem should be totally fixed now. If you see any weirdness, please let me know. And thanks for the heads up.
The problem is in the process of being fixed; by Tuesday evening, it shouldn't happen at all. Thanks for pointing this out!
Ooh thank you. I know exactly why it's doing this now that you mention it, but I hadn't thought about this problem before your post. The good thing is that it's related to the new college prediction algorithms (89% for everyone all the time!). Actually, I plan to fix this tomorrow. Thank you!
So why should I turn in my college essay into this search engine?
Why this site 'only' for incoming freshman? I am a transfer and have been using this site which has been pretty good tool, but I beleive it should accommodate transfers more too, not just H.S. seniors.

You should submit your essay if you want to get feedback from other people (mostly students) in a fairly controlled setting. I've submitted a few essays and often, though not always, found the feedback to be on-the-money. If you don't need this type of feedback, there's no real reason to submit your essay.
Accommodating transfer students is definitely of interest. Transfer students are a much smaller group of people than incoming freshmen, which is why we have chosen to focus much more heavily on incoming freshmen at this time. At some point, we'll add some questions for transfer students that should make the predictions more useful for you all, but I don't anticipate doing this in the near term. Thanks so much for your input.

I really wish I had higher Karma.

I dunno but maybe I should implement a NO ALL CAPS feature. Also, I do need to make links clickable.
NOFOLLOW unless you got bomb karma maybe?

another enhancement would be to set the focus to be on the reply box upon clicking reply! wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh

This is a good point. I'm still tempted to downmod you for it anyways.
Bump. (That thread was getting too nested.)
Hey James, thanks so much for everything you have done, you really are awesome :) I shot an email your way too regarding medical school and what not. If you get the chance, i would greatly appreciate your response! Thank you!!!!
Just testing my wall.
One more test before bed.

I love these new threaded discussions.... so awesome!
If you said that from your own account instead of a fake one, that would mean a lot to me. o_O Snap!
this is the new me James... the new test me. If you can't learn to respect that, you'll have to learn to pretend to respect that. cause the new test brent doesn't take your crap :)
Did you guys make this site?
Why, yes. Thank you for asking. Everything working OK for you? I noticed you don't have a profile.
I think I need to make it more of the signup process flow to add colleges to your profile, and improve the wording that making a tracker is the way to see your chances... anyone else agree? :)
I agree, if only to see how deep this thread can go.
if you want to see how deep this thread can go, then you certainly should disagree. well.. actually rules of improv say you should say yes, but rules of business dictate that more conversation arises out of contentious issues. so i'm not really sure if you should agree or disagree.
Wait, if you're doing improv you have to say yes to everything?
yeah... you ought to. nothing blows your buzz like when someone asks "hey is that your pet penguin?" and you just say "no." how can you work with that????
Hey James! So, first off, let me say, you absolutely rock! (As does Brent :) ) You guys helped me out TONS!
So, I was wondering if you were willing to help me out just a bit more... :) Right now, I am a high school senior and I think I want to major in neuroscience (80-ish % sure). I don't know if I would want to become a researcher or neurosurgeon. I have been leaning towards med school though. I was just wondering what you thought would about the application process/MCATs/college EC's/GPA. Basically, what do you think I can do to make me "med-school worthy"? Thank you! :)

Hey kolya, I'm a medical student right now. What do you think you want to do in the future?
somethin wasn't working right with that email, it gave me this:
To see what they wrote, go to college.mychances.net/view/?id
&appcollege&pagewall to see your college tracker wall.

Okay. Let me know when that happens.
I'd love to have one for grad school.
Thanks for doing this. You've saved countless high schoolers stress and done a great service to the community. You deserve a reward.

Dear James,
I know you may be busy, or preoccupied at this point, but I have an idea.
Perhaps, you can start a grad school tracker, for people trying for business, engineering, medical or law?
Sound like an idea, it'll really help out grad school students.
Peace

Thanks for messaging me though because one of my friends got into my account and indicated that I got into University of Chicago. I didn't get in. I need to change that, and thanks again.
I am thinking about studying at either George Washington or Colgate. I think that GW will provide many easy to reach opportunities like internships, and on the other hand, I think Colgate is another good choice 'cuz I am interested in the liberal arts atmosphere and its tightly knight social life. Damn, you got into Yale though, nice. My cousin went there like a decade ago.
just wanted to talk some trash... I keep thinking of a million random things that need to done. gotta clear my mind and refocus.
on TALKIN TrASH

Thanks!
I had around 20 family members attend over 4 generations and my uncle started SRI. But my family doesn't give huge sums of money, so I'm not sure if its going to help that much. How do you think my chances are?

Hey, I know quite a number of people go into college withe either no clue what they want to major in, or they end up changing their major after taking a few classes. I saw that you are going to John Hopkins, so I was just wondering how you knew you wanted to be a doctor. And if you knew of any programs high school students can participate in, like shadowing a doctor. Thanks!
I still can't believe it. Don't know if this will be it or if there will be more surprises come regular decision time but I am already having a hard time choosing between Caltech and MIT. Being from CA I can't imagine the northeast weather

Right now, my first choice is Yale, but I am going to wait until April to deicide. I saw that you graduated from Yale and went to Johns Hopkins. I am interested in pursuing medical school and was wondering what you thought of the natural sciences at Yale?

Thanks, I'm still in shock!
From all my interactions with QB thus far, I am incredibly satisfied. They opened my eyes to the possibilities for high-achieving, low-income students. Too many students think that prominent universities are out of their reach. They need to know that they can get into these colleges and get paid for their achievements.
I'd be glad to answer any questions you, or anyone, may have about QB, or at least assist in the search.
I would also recommend QB to all students, especially those that dream of incredible universities but consider them unattainable.

I actually just heard back this evening. I am thrilled to say that I will be attending Penn next fall on a Match Scholarship. Thanks for your interest. Do you have any experience with QuestBridge?
Hahaha. You are reading to deep into a simple screen name! ;P
It caught my attention a while back and it has stuck. I just use this screen name for aim and other personal accounts.

yeah, I definitely agree that this page needs to be modified. it's fuuugly ;) Also I just noticed that I must have done incorrect logic or not done what I thought I did, because it emails me when I post on my own wall.
well, they'll get fixed - but notice how this is actually a useful thing that I respond to now when you message me!!!

Are there any extracurriculars I should do just to get into Yale? I would do anything as long as it looks good on a resume
If Yale had been EA instead of ED when I applied, I would have checked out Stanford more seriously... and then still gone to Yale.
