Comments on the Application Process

My Comments on the Stanford Application Process:

Applying was stressful. I needed to round up some safety schools, but I wanted to spend all my effort on my dream school, Stanford. Fortunately I got started hell of early - I remember bringing the application packet up to Tahoe the summer before my senior year, just to get a good sense of it. I'm glad I did that because the first handful of drafts of my main essay really sucked. I eventually found something that I was happy with - and then I had to work revision after revision on it, adding detail, taking away fluff, distilling the feeling and personality I was attempting to give the reader. At the same time, I had to write the "lesser" essays. All of my first drafts of those sucked as well.

So I had to rewrite those multiple times, with different ideas/different angles. It was a time consuming, yet rewarding, process. It's great when you get to create something meaningful that shows your best work. At the same time it is intimidating, because you've invested so much time: you've had your parents go over it, you've had the teacher(s) you respect the most go over it, you've maybe had siblings go over it, so it feels like there is a lot on the line. It's worth it though, because it will improve your chances.

Even with stunning scores and a thoroughly reviewed application, it's still a shot in the dark, so you can't take it personally to get rejected from schools. Just have a well-rounded application list of schools that you genuinely believe you could happily attend. If you have the breadth of safety, match and reach schools you are applying to, you'll get those accepted letters and will have a happy college career...
